Malaysia University Application Dates 2027: When to Apply

Malaysia university application dates for 2027 differ from one university to the next, and most intakes start in January, March, May and September. If you are aiming for January 2027, some universities already closed applications at the end of October, while others stay open until mid-December. Miss January, and the March and May intakes still accept applications until February and March 2027. The table below shows the deadline for each university.
Are Malaysian university applications still open?
Yes, and it is usually the first thing students ask once their results are out: can I still make it before next September? You still have intakes starting between January and May 2027, including the May intake at University UTP (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS), which opens for applications on 23 December 2026.
These are the nearest intakes still open to international students, sorted from the earliest deadline to the latest:
The closest deadline in this table is only weeks away, and putting an application file together takes time before you can submit it. If you are not sure which university is still open for your major, send us your major and your grades, and we will reply with the intakes that are actually open to you.
How does university admission work in Malaysia?
Admission depends on your previous qualification, such as your high school certificate or an equivalent, plus English language requirements for most programmes. Malaysian universities offer Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes.
The universities in Malaysia fall into three groups: public universities, private universities and branch campuses of foreign universities. Each group handles application dates in its own way:
1) Public universities
- More competition for places.
- Fixed application windows that open and close on announced dates, as at UTM University.
- Higher entry requirements, especially in health and engineering faculties.
2) Private universities
- Usually more than one intake a year. UTP, for example, has 3 intakes in 2027 (January, May and September).
- More options for international students.
- Simpler application steps and more intakes during the year.
3) International branch campuses
Such as Monash, Swinburne and University of Nottingham Malaysia.
- Follow the admission policy of the home university.
- Higher academic and English requirements.
- Publish a fixed deadline for each intake months in advance. NUMed, for example, set 16 July 2027 as the deadline for its September 2027 intake.
General application requirements:
- Academic certificates: high school for a Bachelor, a Bachelor for a Master, and a Master for a PhD.
- An English language certificate, if required.
- A copy of a valid passport.

How many semesters do Malaysian universities have?
The number of semesters and their start dates vary between universities. Most public universities run two semesters a year, while many private universities run three, which is why the number of intakes you can apply for each year changes from one university to another. You can find the start date of each semester in our guide: When Does University Study Start in Malaysia
Malaysia university application dates 2027 by university type
Keeping track of deadlines across several universities is tiring, especially since each university presents its dates differently. So we put them in one table, but first, here is how the three types differ:
Public universities: Malaysia public universities work with application windows that have a clear start and end. Universiti Malaya opened applications for international students for the March 2027 Bachelor intake from 7 September 2026 to 30 January 2027. UTM closed its October 2026 intake on 17 July 2026 and has not published its 2027 dates yet.
Private universities: many private universities in Malaysia have more than one intake a year, and the deadline depends on the programme and on the time the student visa needs. Some set a closing date, like UTP, and others only set a lead time, like APU, which asks for applications at least 8 weeks before the intake.
International branch campuses: branches of foreign universities in Malaysia usually follow the calendar of their home university and announce a fixed deadline for each intake. NUMed, for example, set 12 March 2027 for its May Foundation intake and 16 July 2027 for September.
The next table covers 15 universities at Foundation and Bachelor level for international students. Some universities publish the months without a year, and some have not published their 2027 dates yet. For those we wrote contact us for the nearest intake, because our team contacts the university directly to find the nearest available intake for you.
Contact us for the nearest intake means the university has not published the date on its website yet, not that applications are closed. Dates can change, so we review them before every season.
What if I missed the application deadline?
Missing the September deadline is not the end of the road, but it does mean you need to act now so you do not miss January too. Most Malaysian universities have more than one intake, and some accept students into the second semester of the academic year, like Universiti Malaya for its March 2027 Bachelor intake.
These are the officially published 2027 alternatives, by month:
If the university you wanted has already closed applications, you do not have to search for the next intake on your own. Talk to one of the admissions advisors at ApplyUni, tell them your major, and they will point you to the nearest university with an intake that is still open.
Do master’s and medicine programmes have different deadlines?
Yes. The tables above cover Foundation and Bachelor programmes, while master’s and medicine have separate dates at most universities.
Master’s:
- Universiti Malaya: coursework master’s for the March 2027 intake, applications from 7 September 2026 to 30 January 2027.
- MMU: master’s and PhD for the March/April 2027 intake, applications for international students from 1 October 2026 to 17 February 2027. Postgraduate research is open all year.
- UTP: the coursework master’s for January 2027 closed on 31 October 2026, and the research master’s is open all year.
Medicine:
- Newcastle NUMed: Medicine (MBBS) for September 2027, with a deadline of 16 July 2027 for international students.
- Universiti Malaya: the medicine deadline for international students in the 2026/2027 session was 9 June 2026 and has passed. The next session has not been announced yet.
- Taylor’s: Medicine and Pharmacy intakes in April and September 2027.
- IMU: the medicine intake is in September, and the 2026 orientation week ran from 7 to 12 September. The 2027 date has not been published yet.
How to apply to Malaysian universities
Before you apply, check the programme requirements and choose the university that fits you best. The steps themselves are clear, but they need accurate documents, because one missing paper can delay both your admission and your visa.
Application steps:
- Choose the right university and programme based on your qualifications and interests.
- Prepare your academic documents: high school or Bachelor certificate, transcript and a copy of your passport.
- Submit your documents through the university website or an authorised agent before the intake deadline.
- Take an English test if the university asks for one.
- Receive your Offer Letter and accept it.
- Apply for the Student Pass through EMGS after accepting the offer. The student can apply through the EMGS website or the EMGS HUB app, or the university can apply through the STARS system. The official processing time is 14 working days for a complete application, and it can take longer if documents are missing.
- Receive your eVAL, the entry approval issued by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. You cannot enter Malaysia as a student before you receive it, and it is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
- Arrange your accommodation and travel.
Apply directly through ApplyUni, an authorised agent
ApplyUni is an official agency authorised by Malaysian universities and by EMGS. Tips from our admissions advisors
These are the points we see making the difference between a student who made the intake and one who missed it by a few days:
- Start well before the deadline, since some universities ask you to apply 8 weeks to 3 months before the intake.
- Read the programme requirements carefully, especially for medical and engineering majors.
- Check that your passport is valid before applying, and ask the university how long it needs to be valid for.
- Get your English certificate ready early.
- Keep translated and attested copies of your certificates.
- Work with an authorised education agent like ApplyUni so your file is submitted correctly and on time.

And this is the lead time some universities ask for before the intake:
A practical rule: start from the intake start date and count backwards. Subtract the lead time the university asks for, then add time to prepare and translate your documents.
Admission requirements for Malaysian universities
- A high school certificate or equivalent.
- A suitable English level (such as IELTS or TOEFL) if the programme is taught in English.
- Some majors require specific subjects or an aptitude test.

Requirements to study in Malaysia as an international student:
- A valid Student Pass, with an eVAL before you travel.
- Proof of funds to cover tuition and living costs.
These general requirements are enough to start planning to study in Malaysia, then choose the university and intake that suit you.
If you are following your son’s or daughter’s file yourself and want to be sure the documents are complete before the deadline, the ApplyUni team will review them with you for free.
When should students from the UAE and the Gulf apply?
Start from your school calendar. In the UAE, the 2026/2027 school year runs from 31 August 2026 to 2 July 2027, and the Ministry of Education calendar sets the end-of-year results announcement for 30 June to 1 July 2027. Once you know when your results come out, choose the first intake whose deadline you can still meet.
This matters more than it looks. If you wait for your final results, the UTP deadline for September 2027 (30 June 2027) falls before the results announcement, while the NUMed deadline (16 July 2027) comes after it. If your results will arrive after the deadline, ask the university whether it accepts your latest available grades and issues a Conditional Offer.
If you are planning for your son or daughter, the intake date is not the only decision. In the UAE, recognition of degrees earned abroad is handled by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which requires the awarding institution to be legally established, licensed and accredited in its country. Emirati students studying abroad are also subject to a separate resolution that sets ranking conditions for the university and the major, so check this before reserving a seat, not after.
And because we have an office in Dubai, you can follow your son’s or daughter’s file with us in person, from the first question until they settle into their housing in Malaysia.
How can you follow the latest application dates?
- Follow the official websites of the universities.
- Follow authorised education agents on social media, including ApplyUni.
- Subscribe to university newsletters.
We review the dates in this article before every application season, so you can find the latest deadlines in one place.
Where should you start now?
The application deadline decides when you start, but moving early is what lets you choose the university instead of settling for whatever intake is left. Pick your major, then the university, then the nearest intake whose deadline you can meet, and get your documents ready before applications open.
If you are not sure which intake suits your major, start with the tables in this article, then check the deadline of the university you chose before it closes.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Malaysia university application dates for 2027?
There is no single date for all universities. Most intakes are in January, March, May and September 2027, and each university has its own deadline. For example: UNITEN until 14 December 2026 for January, MMU until 23 February 2027 for March, and UTP until 28 February 2027 for May.
When do Malaysian universities open applications for international students?
Some universities open applications months before the intake. UTP opens the May 2027 intake on 23 December 2026, and Universiti Malaya opened the March 2027 intake on 7 September 2026. Others, like APU, accept applications all the time as long as you apply 8 weeks before the intake.
Can I apply after the deadline has passed?
Once an intake closes, you apply for the next one. UTP, for example, accepts applications all year, so if you miss the May 2027 deadline on 28 February, you can apply for September 2027, which runs from 23 April to 30 June 2027. That is why universities with several intakes a year give you a closer chance.
Is there a second semester intake at Malaysian universities?
Yes, at some universities. Universiti Malaya accepts international students into Bachelor Semester II, which starts on 1 March 2027, with an application deadline of 30 January 2027.
How long between applying and starting classes?
It depends on the university. APU asks for applications at least 8 weeks before the intake, Cyberjaya wants documents 3 months before, and Lincoln 2 to 3 months before. EMGS visa processing takes 14 working days for a complete application.
